No importa que no le conozcas. Está ahí fuera. Están ahí fuera. El anonimato, algo que dentro de muy poco va a desaparecer con tanta información al alcance de cualquier persona en conexión, refuerza al que lo sufre. La poética del hombre olvidado es muy antigua pero aún quedan muchas personas ejerciéndola y huyendo de ella, porque incluso para los que aprecian esta soledad, ser parte del escaparate es el principal objetivo. Mel Semé, un músico que podría ser el centro de cualquier corrillo erudito musical, se descubre en cada jam session que dirige, en los conciertos de su banda Radio Malanga y en este pequeño artículo sobre su vida.


No pretendo ser el descubridor de nadie. Él se descubre así mismo cada vez que te enseña su música. La música es suya y lo ha sido desde siempre: Crecí en un familia musical. Mi padre era muy religioso, como mi madre, de hecho se conocieron en el coro de una iglesia de Santiago de Cuba donde mi abuela tocaba el piano. La música estaba muy vinculada a la vida religiosa que ellos llevaban. Luego se mudaron a Camagüey donde siguieron combinando sus ideales espirituales con la música. Entre semana, cuando había menos gente y faltaban algunos músicos, yo aprovechaba para practicar. Aunque el momento que recuerdo más especial fue cuando compraron una batería, me volví loco. Eso fue a los 8 años. A los 9 ya estaba en la Escuela Vocacional de Arte, un lugar donde se descubría la capacidad musical de los niños." La espiritualidad está ahí. Sun Ra era tan espiritual que llegó a conectar con los extraterrestres, como Mix Master Mike. Pero Mel no es tan famoso como ellos. Pero sí alcanza la erudición con sus instrumentos. Herbie

Después llegué a la Universidad. Allí descubrí las figuras más importantes del jazz y también las continuas visitas de grandes músicos me permitieron disfrutar de un intercambio que me hizo crecer como músico. George Benson, Steve Coleman,Steward Copland y Herbie Hancock. Su áurea invadía el lugar incluso antes de que empezara a tocar. Por la mañana estuvo comiendo con los directores de la escuela, pero luego estuvo paseando por allí. Yo estaba sentado en un banco, cuando él se paró y se sentó a mi lado a conversar. Dada mi situación, adolescente y cubano, aquello se amplificó y en seguida me sentí invadido por la emoción y con las ganas de compartir algún momento con el maestro. Después de todo mi aprendizaje, la academia pasaba a un segundo plano. Las normas para un músico son muy importantes, pero como siempre hay que romper esas reglas para conseguir algo. Mel era un académico, no un beatmaker cualquiera que samplea lo primero que le parece bien. La ingenuidad de una persona sin conocimiento le hace aventurarse en experimentos que muchas veces tienen gran resultado. Bueno, a veces eso no da no tan buen resultado. Esa inocencia para alguien que conoce el tema es difícil de conseguir, pero el señor de los Headhunters estuvo allí para remarcar la importancia del sentimiento, de la expresión por sí misma: Las notas por sí solas no se tocan. Lo más importante de todo es saber vivir, me dijo Herbie Hancock. La música es un reflejo de la vida. La técnica es importante, pero lo más importante es tener todos los sentidos abiertos a lo que ocurre a nuestro alrededor. Movimiento y espíritu

Ahora Mel vive en la montaña rodeado de una comunidad de artistas y "protegido" por su hija y su pareja Sol. La mejor respuesta contra algo que no nos gusta es reaccionar, crear algo, proponer otro camino. Babylon molesta y por eso Fela Kuti creó su propio estado, con puntos muy discutibles, éticamente hablando. Mel también quiere vivir mejor y después de viajar por todo el mundo se asienta en esta parcela a intentar renovar positivamente las normas sociales. Bueno, quizás sólo a vivir bien y punto. De eso se trata. Después de éxodo ancestral y nomadismo vital llega la calma, aunque no sabría cualificar los movimientos, quiero pensar que las tempestades que provocan las migraciones sólo generan buenas energías a los que las practican. La comunidad se ha encontrado conmigo, yo no la he creado. En este momento de mi vida es perfecto, no sé cuánto tiempo estaré aquí. Hablamos sobre su espiritualidad, en su música y en su vida. Hacer música es un mensaje. Te conecta directamente con lo eterno, las esencias. Es algo que no puedo evitar, aunque mi punto de vista sobre la religión se ha abierto. Yo en la música, me dejo llevar. Hay una intuición, algo que todos tenemos y que debemos buscar. Estoy intentando familiarizarme con esta intuición. Esto también lo aplico en las relaciones personales. Quiero hablar el mismo idioma, siempre lo siento, aunque a veces se esconde.

Freestyle

Es muy interesante observar cómo Mel gestiona sus jams en Chaise Lounge. Siendo músico se podría intuir mucha más complicación en estas fiestas y, sobretodo; por el número de personas que aparecen en el local para demostrar sus habilidades. Pero es un gran conciliador y maneja el ambiente de manera perfecta. Gestos, miradas, pocas palabras. Sólo esto basta para que todo funciones bien y, también, que el respeto esté siempre bien presente. Desde que las organizo, han tomado muchas formas. Ahora las encuentro mucho más maduras. Lo hacemos con otro músico, un teclista, Tom. Hay algunas jams que quieren alcanzar determinadas elites eruditas o estilísticas. El camino nuestro es buen rollo, fiesta, intercambio,... y la gente se lo pasa muy bien y eso me hace muy feliz. Soy un moderador, simplemente. Suelen ser un caos, pero intento poner un poco de orden, equilibrar. Siempre lo hago de la manera más amable. La amabilidad genera amabilidad.

Ahora Mel, entre estos proyectos, también se encuentra descubriendo la música reggae con la banda Black Gandhi. No se puede parar nunca. Aún teniendo este poderoso y anónimo currículum hay que seguir buscando, porque a veces uno se encuentra con estos grandes personajes. No es ningún nombre propio, no se encuentra en ningún fascículo de nuestra enciclopedia musical pero podría ser un lunático Sun Ra, un atrevido Hancock o un socialmente implicado Fela Kuti.
