Dentro de la multitud de estilos musicales existentes, es dentro del jazz donde se encuentran una mayor variedad e influencia en la música moderna, debido a su riqueza musical y su difusión en la primera mitad del siglo pasado. En la música moderna, como en casi todas las épocas, existen muchos músicos y estilos desconocidos por el gran público, y dentro de éstos se encuentra uno de los más ricos en cuanto a sus raíces; el gipsy jazz, jazz manouche o gipsy swing. Este estilo debe su origen al mestizaje producido por los músicos americanos llegados a París y los músicos cíngaros y gitanos que allí vivían durante la segunda guerra mundial.

Se formó tanto en las chabolas y caravanas de los gitanos, de donde obtuvo uno de sus nombres [manouche es cíngaro o gitano en francés], como durante sus viajes, de los cuales se enriquecían de otras músicas y culturas como el flamenco y la música árabe.
De entre los primeros músicos pertenecientes a este estilo debemos destacar a uno entre todos; Django Reinhardt, guitarrista gitano-belga precursor de este estilo musical y uno de los mejores compositores y guitarristas de la historia de la música.

Django merecería un capítulo aparte porque, además de sus grandes composiciones y su enorme influencia en el panorama actual del gipsy jazz, consiguió una depurada técnica después de quemarse dos dedos de la mano al arder en llamas la caravana en la que vivía.
La influencia de Django es tan grande que hoy día se pueden escuchar muchas de sus canciones interpretadas por muchos músicos. Desde los mejores intérpretes, a músicos de ciudad. Entre éstos se encuentran grandes bandas. Grandes músicos que podréis destripar en cuanto algo de su obra caiga en vuestras manos. La formación más usual la formaban un par de guitarristas, un contrabajista, un violinista y, en algunos casos, un acordeonista y/o un clarinetista.

Django Reinhardt

Guitarrista gitano-belga nacido en Bélgica en 1910. Entre sus obras más destacadas se encuentran Daphne, Djangology, Manoir de Mes Rêves, Minor Swing, Nuages, Souvenirs o Stompin’ at Decca. También se pueden escuchar de sus cuerdas grandes clásicos como Tigre Rag, Sweet Georgia Brown, St. Louis Blues o I Got Rythm.

Stéphane Grappelli

Violinista nacido en París en 1908, el cuál compuso junto a Django Reinhardt sus mejores piezas. Comenzó tocando en teatros y orquestas como violinista y pianista, para más tarde formar parte de la banda de Django, Hot Club of France Quintet. Prosiguió su carrera en solitario tras la muerte de Django colaborando con multitud de intérpretes.

Bireli Lagrene

Guitarrista nacido en Francia en 1966. Este “niño prodigio” de la guitarra consiguió sacar a los 13 años un sonido casi exacto al de Django Reinhardt. Hoy día es uno de los más consolidados guitarristas dentro del Gipsy Jazz. Sus mejores grabaciones se llevaron a cabo con la banda Gipsy Project, con la que versiona los mejores temas de Django.

The Rosenberg Trío

Este trío de tres hermanos liderados por Stochelo Rosenberg [guitarra] es uno de las bandas más influenciadas por Django. En estos momentos están realizando varios trabajos con claras influencias de la música latina y el flamenco. Destacan sus trabajos “Live in Samois” y “Sueños Gitanos”.

Romane

Este guitarrista es de los más personales en cuanto a composiciones. Aunque tiene una clara influencia también de Django, pueden escucharse trabajos en los que no interpreta ninguna pieza de Django [inusual en un álbum de gipsy jazz]. Entre sus trabajos más espectaculares están Ombre y Djangovision.

Tchavolo Schmitt

Este guitarrista de la vieja escuela consigue los mejores ritmos de la guitarra acústica. Entre sus mejores trabajos podemos escuchar “Miri Familia” y la Banda Sonora de la película Swing.

Les Doigts de l´Homme

Una de las mejores bandas actuales. Ritmos frenéticos y composiciones propias con aires árabes, cíngaros, gitanos y toques de jazz. De sus trabajos destaca el álbum “Les doigts de l´Homme”.

Existen muchos otros músicos impresionantes como los guitarristas Angelo Debarre, Samson Schmitt, Dorado Schmitt, Jimmy Rosenberg… -acordeonistas como Richard Galliano, Frédéric Schlick… -los violinistas Florin Nicolescu, Aurélien Trigo -que merece la pena escuchar si se quiere profundizar en el apasionante mundo del gipsy jazz-.
