¿Vas a hacer algo visual? Joder, no.

Como “Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian”.

Me dijo, ”Sabes?

A veces.

Joder. Vamos a ver.

Time passes irrevocably. The fame of the night away on the day. The stock market continues to fall and rise. All the backlog seems innocuous, sometimes, if it is not accompanied by owners. Prefuse73 marked a before and after ten years ago and since then has not stopped raining. The course was set, and continued working from his studio trying to move away from the noise of every day to dive into the music. It has come a very long distance and nothing is what it was. INTERVIEW PREFUSE 73,
BARCELONA, 5 March 2009, Hotel 10 Marina.

In our view, the front page of Australian Daniel McPharlin contrast to everything that comes down to design a cheaper type available for download. Perhaps this is the secret to a good illustration, illustrator fucking. A character who surprises the kind lit by street restless. Makes believe in what you see in his painting.
Are these ideas into photographic perspective. A genius who transmits it carefully with their own instruments. Carrying out this picture, how long it took? ¿3 months? ¿1 years?

I do not know when he made the original works. ¡¡You should see the cover of the EP is a complete madness!

I wanted to get the album on vinyl and had to be done in a serious and sincere. I met him and told him what I wanted, which was willing to pay the money in my pocket and pay for the poster. I wanted a cover like those of the seventies. Of those who shone in the dark. Had to be that way.

The essence of the real illustrators with a vocation of permanent. Pinceladas unmatched, as found in Mati Klarwein, Frank Stella and Robert Venosa. The phase of the psychedelic paint.

Yes! Absolutely! What would have happened if he had been asked to seal the cover! What would have been like this if it had given directly to Warp? That is what young boys do. We are looking for a Warp artist and is responsible for everything. Must have some integrity in the set. All they see is the number of hits on myspace and the number of downloads you have. I ask, Are you going to do some live beyond your laptop? Are you going to do something visual? Shit, no.

The covers of your previous albums are also illustrations ...

Kim Huerta, I liked what I did because you do it manually. Moreover, all you have left in my records was done by hand. The people I work with your hands dirty when they have finished their work. They could go in one direction or another, but it was important that we make as part of a process and was done manually to enable it to represent what it is and be reflective. And you can acquire a completely different style to the disc, but the intention was to match. Much work was to get it conceptually. Always try to work with people open to suggestions outside like me.

You grew up and began to develop as an artist between areas romantic, dirty and heterogeneous of graffiti and illustration. When you have a project in mind I guess it's necessary that people who work with you try to understand a little what you want to express ...

What I commented Daniel was conceptually that we should do something similar to what was done in the seventies where they were seeking from the behind the music to relate them to the deck. I said, do not appear to know at what point in time is this person within the environment that surrounds it. Surely he does not should not matter what you say, but the meaning was to show that the individual could be found in the future, or in a prehistoric past. That this individual was a woman and everything she touched became pregnant. Like "Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian. Like years ago, where, from the musical concept, it went further and created impressive works and not just a simple design with a geometric figure. Even the logo appears to be a bit archaic. I do not easy, but I Daniel understood and followed to perfection. Remade paintings completed in a month to fit in a 12x12 measures. It is the only thing done by computer.

The essence of these discs now compressed digits, which is seeking from the couch at home when you can find bargains understand them second hand on the corner next door. Damn technology that dares to bring you the mp3 of Biches Brew at hand for just 2 bucks. You see the music with contempt. For the love of god, for two bucks more you'll make a coffee or a cigarette ...

Accurate. One wants to hear music the same way that it was recorded. Was recorded and this analogy is the way one wants to hear instead of this garbage remastered or mp3 that you provide. Are not even listening to the full spectrum of sound. Missing elements. Which are not. Know what the scientists say the technology, but you're not listening in the same way. Nor are getting the same visual representation, are not holding the vinyl, you're not looking to turn in the plate, or are sitting in front. Do not you listen in the same way that knowing that you have to flip it over.

The music is not so, is not carried on the iPod. Where are the shelves filled with original titles? What was to stop diggin '? We use as a convenient digital format, but must be given their importance and relative value ...

Moreover, today's CD and the digital world lost some ground and market favoring vinyl. Many groups prefer to get their pop releases on vinyl now trading strategy, and they are working.

In New York all the record stores had to close and move to smaller places you see now with all the walls covered with vinyl instead of CDs. All information stored in digital junk downloads and the compact is becoming irrelevant because you can burn thousands of CDs in very little time and all the digital data in 30 or 40 years will be lost. Have an expiration date. All that remains is this, the analog tape or vinyl, printed with your information physically. And, you know what is the most fucked up? When we did the album mastered by analogy, as the old school, and had this kind, a little higher, which was fined.

She said, "You know? Ampex tapes stopped making long ago. Do you know who has returned to use. " "No." I answered. "The CIA." I told her why and she said, "All this information is digital cleared over a period of time and need not to lose the tape recording of all the secrets that remain locked unimaginable. " Even some twisted motherfuckers like the CIA turned to using analog tape as a resource.

Now that music has become like the machines and mp3's computers and is often just push a button and listen, put your eyes toward the front of your disk and can not avoid thinking about the close relationship between home design and music. If it seems as if you were alone in the middle of the jungle ...

Exactly, I agree that ..., I try one time ... (gets up and picks up a vinyl of "Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian" which appears next to his suitcase). This guy is weird. I went to this guy and told him what was going around. The album is all recorded on analog tape. This was supposed to be. Everything you see printed index numbers you see mean nothing at all, are just what the industry wants you to download a small realizarte. To me it makes no difference. It is not a marketing plan. The disc is made to be listened to from beginning to end as if it were a single piece. Should not cut into pieces. It is supposed to be viewed as a piece of 40 min.

As an old and broken tape. My friend Roberto buy a device worn on eBay, and managed. I made beats on my MPC, I took off the apparatus, I played a bit and recorded on tape from which all the digital element. Why now a lot of programs do it all for you. You can get any program and have made a beat in 5 min. The concept was to decide how to beat and everything is intertwined, as all items were transformed into an entire block of 40 min.

I had all this material and use the tape recording could have that effect, and could also be used as an effect to sound like when they did years ago. It's not as if I were saying, "to give them to all other digital recorders," because not everyone has access to an analog tape. It was simply the way that I took as a starting point. When using tape you lose control over many things. Once you've recorded on tape there is no way to fix it digitally. What you do is what is recorded, and you have to work. Joint when you have a tapestry effect, and that's when you put everything on the computer. Only Pro Tools. No program. At the time of putting everything in real time sounds like dishes, feedback loops, echoplex into other echoplex, what did was put a towel over the screen so that only could hear the speakers. In this way, remove everything in front of the screen, all the additional tracks and shit like that just are not an oral digital sense.

You record once or need more attempts to make the tape?

Sometimes. Depending on the quality they wanted to achieve. There were things we wanted to up sounding overworked. You know? Not to sound so digital that Nona is on the market today. I did not want to sound like this redundant crap that everyone is doing. I wanted to do something different and that was the starting point. It was something like, "OK, half of the disc instead of bringing the intensity further, go to down to zero. I'm going to play just one line of piano, write a few words, sing and use my voice as a texture to explain what I'm doing. " This is what we interpret our ears instead of the nonsense and cheap digital audio downloads are killing music, their physical stores and clubs. I mean, death is what must not be destroyed. And this need not be happening. The industry and the people making these decisions do not have the slightest idea what they are doing. They are screwing over the entire world. This disc is supposed to be released on vinyl. You have to learn to understand the physical format. If you do not, and you have an mp3 theoretical, then music is just theoretical. It is as if there were something real. What happened to those close to the store, come and look at the cover of a disc and say, "What the hell is this so cute?"?

At the beginning appear in any record as part of a group of representatives of the avant-hip hop artists along with some from birth, has even collaborated with them. What is your relationship with this style of music?

I have absolute respect for what they do, but I come from an entirely different site. That is something that helped me creatively. No part of any group in particular, had no other people. I got my own place with no one to influence me. His way of approaching the music was most striking, and from the hardest heart. I spent to lay my head to the music without drawing much attention. Regardless of Dose rate is an extraordinary and a great person I did not like that way of making direct extravagant. Our style is totally different music and trying to focus the role that sound good and make the people involved.

Hip hop, as a culture, an attitude is more varied than interprets reality, a form of musical style. This is not a good album, but to make your own line of work. We must separate the labels. And while it is only the artist as such. Madlib is Madlib, Jay Dee Jay Dee and it is Prefuse Prefuse and each has its characteristic style. We hear that on occasion talked about an anecdote that happened to Madlib when to call a journalist used his real name, Otis - and this does not feel well ...

It is a way of trying to strictly separate what one does what it is. And also a way of separating each of the projects. I tried to explain that a lot of times. Many times I asked about the link between the Prefuse and Savath & Savalas, and I must insist that there is any connection at all. Sounds Eva's voice to something remotely similar to something you hear on Prefuse? What do Eva and I Savath & Savalas was born from listening to a lot of old things that inspire us in different places and responding to our music and emotions.

For some reason, and because of ignorance, it reduces everything that represents the
project "of the new Prefuse 73. I do not know how many times I have to say again that I do not want Savath & Savalas, and whatever you want to do, is stigmatized by the figure of Prefuse.

I said, an attitude ...

If it is simply the platform it is. I often wonder why the changes in style of my discs. And I can say is that I will not repeat "One Word Extinguisher" ten times. If it were, it would have already left after the third disc. Then I made the effort to do what the industry asked me to sell the amount of discs that were sold with "One Word Extinguisher." Other then if it had sold 150 thousand copies and would have made them happy, he had left. On the other hand if you sell 15 of the type I will be happier there. And if someone intends to say that trying to repeat what I did on previous discs challenge them to come and see me and my studio work. See the differences between this and previous work. This topic offends me in some way. You can turn on when it comes out because the two ideas - Savath & Savalas and Prefuse 73 - are so alienated that they become holy. Working with Eva, the exchange itself to be my father in Barcelona, and the fact that I've lived among Miami, Atlanta and New York, is a much deeper level. She has taught me more about my own culture than anyone ever. Our music is very intense exchange and that is important, but nobody cares, and even difficult to talk about the project being led here.

Note: change the subject and spoke at length about his new project with Zach Hill ...

Curiously, I wonder whether or not something is mounted or edited because a friend told me the same thing and is not believed that what sounded not mounted. I tell you that it takes all kinds in one go. It is really a pass. It'sa kind superinteresante. It is a well respected drummer in the U.S.. He plays the drums since age 9. He left the studies just to get to school to play the drums and has since devoted just to that. Must be my age and has not stopped since. It has been quite an experience working with him. It's amazing what you can do with the battery. It has dedicated a lifetime to play relentlessly - and making it sound so melodic. It has a lot of work and different projects. Ago and is so many things sounded musically speaking, so there goes that. There are things that can not connect. That if there are many, but other than my ears are unable to process. Only cares about playing. We do not have to sleep in a van or a 5 star hotel. In this sense it is very different to me. He got an album last year for birth control because the seal was not going to make a vinyl and he wanted to make the record on vinyl. He contacted me because he wanted me to produce. I said, "I want you produce?". He replied, "Yes." Caught me by surprise. Ended up playing with him. I was getting and I said, screw them, and voices that sound on the disc are mine.

Note: After 4 hours of cross points of view when you arrive and say that the music speaks for itself. At times when the art loses its value too justified. We would not be committing that mistake.

Shit. Let's see. Must be my interview number 75 from Japan. And you guys, you have caught the first since the beginning and you have carried further than any other. Has been a true honor to spend the afternoon with you.
